Are You Ready to Parent?

Considering one’s readiness to parent could be a factor in whether to make a decision for adoption. Single parenting is a very popular decision these days. It is often a challenging task. Statistics reveal that a great many struggle with the demands of this lifestyle choice as do their children.

To help in the process of considering one’s readiness to parent, the following is offered as questions to ponder to help you clarify your situation and how single parenting could impact your life.

♦  How will a child impact my life at the current time?  (i.e. education, social life, dating, finances, time demands, etc.)

♦  How would having the responsibility of raising a child affect my future?  (i.e. education, career, marriage, finances, etc.)

♦  What are the long term effects and consequences of my decision, whether it be for parenting or adoption?

♦  Am I willing to devote the time to be a responsible parent?  (i.e. to go to doctors appointments, stay up in the middle of the night with a sick child, to read parenting books and equip myself with the skills I need, to have limitations on my social life, etc.)

♦  Can I provide for my child the things I want for my child?

♦  Can I raise my child and be independent or will I be dependent upon other?  (i.e. financially, transporation, housing, meeting the physical needs of my child, etc.)

♦  Do I have the support system to help me?  (i.e. parents, family, friends)

♦  In what ways will I need help...to what extent and for how long?

♦  Can I handle a job, a child, a social life and do the other things I want to do at the same time?  Am I ready for this responsibility?

♦  Am I willing to have a life-long relationship with the father of the baby and his family?  To what extent will this be a factor now and in the future?

Again, these are just some relevant questions to consider.  There are other helpful materials tro review on parenting as well as other people you could consult with to shed additional light on this issue.  You can certainly contact us for mroe information on this.
