One of the most important
questions people have is regarding what impact adoption has
on the life of a child. In other words, “How are adopted
children faring?”
We realize there is a great deal
of confusion, misunderstanding and misrepresentation
regarding this question. We can share information on this
with you as well as the results of studies which reveal that
adopted children are doing well, especially those adopted as
infants.
Adoption is a choice that is
made because of what is viewed as being in the best
interests of a child. Yes, most children do exceptionally
well. Like many non-adopted children, some are struggling
and having difficulties. The question which must be asked
is, “How many of the difficulties children are having are
related to being adopted versus other issues?”
Certainly, any study must
distinguish between children adopted as infants and those
adopted as older children who may have experienced trauma
and other difficult life situations. Adopted children have
the benefit of being with parents who are highly motivated
and carefully screened to ensure they are strong families.
This provides a good basis for dealing with many challenges
adoptive parents may face with an adopted child.
It’s been estimated that about
2% of people in our nation are adopted. Add to this their
family members and close friends and roughly 25% of our
population is touched by adoption. All of this underscores
the support there is for adopted persons. |
