There
are many ways to adopt a child as well as many variations of
how adoptions are arranged and planned. These include the
following:
Domestic
Adoptions — Adopting a child within ones own
country.
International
Adoptions — Adopting a child from another
country.
Relative
Adoptions — Adopting a child who is a blood
relative.
Non-relative
Adoptions — Adopting a child who is not a
blood relative.
Older Child
Adoptions — This usually involves adopting a
child out of foster care.
Infant
Adoptions — This usually involves the
process of placing a child directly after birth
with an adoptive family.
Special Needs
Adoptions — This involves adopting children
who meet the definition of a “special needs
child”.
Open Adoptions
— Adoptions which include a level of
communication between the child’s birth parents
and adoptive parents.
Closed
Adoptions — Adoptions which have little, if
any, communication between the child’s birth
parents and adoptive parents. Obviously, there
are varying procedures and issues with each type
of adoption.
