Issues in Counseling for Unplanned Pregnancies
Unplanned pregnancies pose many difficult questions and bring a wide variety of emotions to the forefront. Georgia AGAPE is a licensed agency specializing in services to birthparents to help them through this time of crisis.
Our counseling and assistance is based upon respect for the personal values of each individual and honors the privacy and confidentiality of this special relationship. Our counseling is based on the recognition that each person is a unique individual who responds differently based upon their background, needs, circumstances, etc.
Issues dealt with in counseling include the following:
- Facing the hard realities of the situation. Working through denial. Helping to tell one's own story.
- Encouragement and support in facing the many confusing emotions such as fear, despair, guilt, shame, depression, anxiety, etc.
- Crisis intervention for immediate and urgent concerns, when necessary.
- Dealing with personal needs, issues and circumstances which are impacting how one is handling the pregnancy and plans for the baby.
- Clarifying personal values and goals.
- Exploring options and helping through the decision making process.
- Responding to the relationship with the birthfather and understanding his role.
- Dealing with parents and extended family members - their influence, attitudes, perspectives and pressures.
- Building a support system.
- Anticipating, understanding and accepting changes in the perception of self.
- Evaluating parenting skills and resources. Providing training and support if this is the chosen plan.
- Exploring the realities of adoption and dispelling prevalent myths and misunderstandings. Responding to the common fears and misconceptions of adoption.
- Help with making an adoption placement if that is the chosen plan.
