Are You Ready To Be a Parent?

One's readiness and ability to parent is an important consideration in making a decision to raise a child oneself or place a child for adoption with another loving family to raise.
The following are some factors to consider in making a decision to parent your child:
- How will a child impact my life at the current time?
(i.e., education, social life, dating, finances, time demands, etc.)
- How would having the responsibility of raising a child affect my future?
(i.e., education, career, marriage, finances, etc.)
- Do I see the long-term consequences of my decision whether it be for parenting or adoption?
- How important is freedom to me and the ability to do what I want to do when I want to do it?
- Am I willing to devote the time to be a responsible parent?
(i.e., to go to doctor's appointments, to stay up in the middle of the night with the child, to read parenting books, to be tied down socially, etc.)
- Can I provide for my child the things I want for my child?
- Can I raise a child and be independent or will I be dependent upon others?
(i.e., financially, transportation, housing, meeting the physical needs of my child, etc.)
- Can I handle a job, a child, a social life and do the other things I want to do at the same time? Am I ready for this responsibility?
- Am I willing to have a life-long relationship with the father of the baby and his parents?
- What are the real reasons I want to parent my child at this time?
Evaluate each reason for the following:
- its importance to you;
- its effect on yourself and your child; and
- in consideration of the context of your current situation.
